Antonio Stradivari 1702 ca. VL Conte de Fontana, Oistrakh, Peterlongo
This violin still bears its original label that reads ‘Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis/Faciebat Anno 1702’, but some experts are nevertheless inclined to believe an earlier production date. Charles Beare for instance wrote: ‘Although dated 1702, according to its late owner, Dr Paolo Peterlongo, this violin recalls the ‘Tuscan’ and ‘Auer’ instruments, both of which date from 1690. The materials and varnish also seem to support the hypothesis of an earlier date.’
