Antonio Stradivari 1709 VL Scotta-Kaulbach, Kempner
This charming specimen, manufactured in 1709, is named after two of its past owners. It was once the instrument of the Danish violinist Frida Schytte (1871–1948), who was publicly known by her stage name, Frida Scotta. A celebrated soloist since her childhood, her likeness was depicted by her compatriot Valdemar Schönheyder Møller, a talented but neurotic painter from Aarhus. Mrs. F. Schytte married the German painter Friedrich August von Kaulbach, which explains the hyphenated second name of the violin. The secondary moniker of the instrument is borrowed from Mrs. Barbara Kempner, a violinist who played in the Busch Ensemble, which was founded by the violinist Adolf Busch in the 1940s.
