Giovanni Battista Guadagnini
Vita
Giovanni Battista Guadagnini, who was born in Bilegno in 1711 and died in Turin in 1786, was certainly one of the most important violin makers of his time. His creative periods can be defined as follows: 1740-1749 in Piacenza; 1750 -1758 in Milan; 1758 in Cremona (this remains disputed); 1759-1771 in Parma; and finally 1771-1786 in Turin. Alongside the models of Stradivari and Guarneri, G.B. Guadagnini’s model is also used by many violin makers as a template for their instruments. The relatively flat arching of the instruments leads to their characteristically full sound and carrying power.
